cropped-amy.jpgOn July 10, 2012 I was appointed to the Shaker Heights City School Board to fill the seat vacated by Jennifer Mearns.

I am honored to serve as a Shaker School Board member, and I am proud to have been a member of the team that led the search for a new superintendent.  My perspective about the search was guided by my views about what will be critical to the district’s continued success.

I live in the Fernway District with my husband, Andy, and my two daughters.  Harley (8) is a third grader at Fernway, and Abigail is three.

These are the four areas that I believe are critical to the district’s future:

1. Instructional Leadership – we must ensure that all of our students are equipped to realize their fullest potential

2. Fiscal Responsibility – we must aggressively evaluate the financial impact of our decisions and seek innovative and cost-effective ways to meet the district’s needs

3.  Data-driven Decision-making – we must increase the use of data to guide our decisions in the district

4.  Transparency, Engagement and Involvement of the Community – we must ensure that our parents, community members, the City and employers are partners in the education of our students

I am proud to report that I have played the following leadership roles in the district since 2010:

  • July 2012-Present:  School Board Member
  • August 2012-May 2013:  Member of Performance Compensation Committee – a committee of administrators, faculty and board members developed to study teacher evaluation methods in the district and develop a high-fidelity model for peer evaluation in the district
  • October 2012-Present:  Member of Mayor’s Financial Task Force representing the School Board – a committee of citizens that advise the Mayor on various financial matters in the City including evaluating the City’s cost-cutting measures
  • May 2011-Present:  Member of the Finance & Audit Committee – a board committee responsible for reviewing the district’s financial performance and recommending financial polices, cost-cutting initiatives and levy terms
  • June-October 2010:  Pro Bono Cost-Cutting & Efficiency Project – conducted a project to identify cost-cutting and efficiency opportunities at the district; interviewed nearly 20 district employees including administrators, faculty and staff

  • Shaker Heights Community Life & Health Committee Member
  • Shaker Heights Development Corporation Board Member
  • Neighborhood Housing Services of Greater Cleveland Board Member, Vice Chair and Finance Committee Member
  • E City Board Member and Vice Chair
